Marvel Comics on the Polish publishing market in the years 2012–2016 (non-serial publications)

Due to the increasing number of comic books published in Poland, the author of this elaboration decided to study how many Marvel Comics picture stories in the form of non-serial publications was published on the Polish market between 2012–2016. The work also focuses on the issue of the quality of the published works (format, print, binding) and attempts to establish the reasons why the Marvel Comics titles came to Poland. The study starts with the creation of the preliminary version of the list of Marvel Comics stories published on our market, which was being updated as they developed. The number of publications was counted inter alia based on the list of comics published in Poland, available at the Aleja Komiksu Internet website, which is being updated constantly, in contrast with the National Bibliography, which is only being updated once the National Library receives the required copies from the publishers. The resources of libraries and the author’s own resources comprised the source of the study. It was established that in the years 2012–2016 there appeared 177 positions in total, published by Albatros, Egmont Publishing, Hachette Polska, Mucha Comics, Albatros and Waneko. Hard cover is the dominating one, with only 39 positions in 177 published with soft cover. The most popular format was 18 x 27 cm – 138 positions. The remaining 39 comics were printed in the slightly smaller format of 17 x 26 cm. the reasons why the publishers decide to issue Marvel Comics stories are the popularity of the films and TV series based on them and the desire to compete with other companies publishing the picture stories of the American potentate.

Rozprawa jest aspektową monografią jednego z wątków poezji polskiego modernizmu. Bierze na warsztat złożony kompleks zagadnień, których problemowe centrum wyznacza kategoria ciemności – rozumianej jako figura poetyckiej wyobraźni i metaforyczny analogon doświadczenia. Historycznoliteracki ogląd uwzględniający długie trwanie modernistycznych tendencji jest w książce przedpolem dla lektury pozostającej blisko tekstu – mocno podbudowanej analitycznie i wiernej wpisanym w utwór dyrektywom interpretacyjnym. W prowadzonych rozważaniach opis architektoniki poszczególnych utworów tworzy podstawę dla rozpoznań mówiących o poznawczej sile poezji. Natomiast perspektywa odsłaniająca egzystencjalny wymiar literatury pozwala podjąć ostrożną próbę opisu ciemnego nurtu nowoczesnej liryki jako formy życia duchowego. Zagadnienia te tworzą w książce komplementarne względem siebie kręgi problemowe i z różną siłą dochodzą do głosu w każdym ogniwie rozprawy, a łącząca je ścisła relacja pozostaje stałym punktem odniesienia dociekań i na różne sposoby modeluje kolejne odsłony wywodu, tworząc tym samym wyrazistą ramę dla prezentowanych lektur i wyprowadzonych z nich odczytań.

Otwierające całość Uwagi wskazują punkt wyjścia rozważań – wyznaczają azymut badawczych poszukiwań. Kolejne rozdziały to interpretacyjne zbliżenia. Część z nich dotyczy pojedynczych utworów – przede wszystkim wierszy i poematów (wyjątek stanowi inicjalny rozdział poświęcony postaci Samotnika z Wyzwolenia Wyspiańskiego – postaci, która jest figurą poety stającego na scenie nowoczesności). Inne są próbą przekrojowego ujęcia wybranych aspektów poetyckiego dzieła ważnych poetów szeroko rozumianego modernizmu (Leśmiana, Czechowicza, Wata, Herberta, Krynickiego). Wszystkie składają się na panoramę spotkań dwudziestowiecznej liryki z różnymi odmianami ciemności – artystycznej, egzystencjalnej, duchowej, metafizycznej, politycznej.

Kreślona w książce panorama ukazuje wewnętrzną dynamikę polskiej poezji XX wieku – zachodzące w jej obrębie przemiany i przewartościowania. Ale odsłania też długie trwanie modernistycznych form wyobraźni – często ukształtowanych jeszcze w obrębie Młodej Polski i właśnie młodopolski dopływ jest najważniejszym z uwzględnionych w rozprawie historycznoliterackich kontekstów.

The treatise is a multi-aspect monograph of one of threads of Polish modernism. It analyses a complex set of issues, the heart of which is the category of darkness - understood as a figure of poetic imagination and a metaphorical simulation of experience. Historico-literary examination considering long-lasting modernist tendencies serves to prepare the ground for a close reading with strong analytical underpinnings and
faithful to the interpretative directives inscribed in the text. In my deliberations, a description of the structure of the individual works forms a base for recognizing the cognitive power of poetry. The strength of this perspective in revealing the existential dimension of literature
is that it enables the description of the dark current of modern lyrical poetry as an expression of spiritual life. In doing so the book presents a range of complementary strands within this dark current all of these elements come to the foreground with varying strength throughout the treatise. The relation which links them remains as a point of reference
of the investigations, and it structures the subsequent stages of the discourse, thus creating a distinctive frame for the readings presented and the interpretations derived from them.

Remarks, the introduction to the treatise, indicates a point of departure for discussion within the book - it determines the form of research survey. Subsequent chapters are interpretive encounters. Parts of them focus on single works, expecially poems (with the exception of
initial chapter which is devoted to The Loner from Wyspiański's The Liberation, a character who is a poet standing on the stage of modernity). Other chapters offer a cross-sectional presentation of selected aspects of important poets' works falling within a broad understanding of Modernism (Lesmian, Czechowicz, Wat, Herbert, Krynicki). They all
constitute a panorama of encounters with 20th century lyrical poetry with different varieties of darkness - artistic, existential, spiritual, metaphysical, political.

The panorama outlined in the book depicts the internal dynamics of 20th century Polish poetry, the changes and the revisions taking place within it. However, it also reveals a long-standing modernist form of imagination, often shaped as early as the Young Poland movement, and it is this period which is the most important among the historicoliterary
contexts considered in this treatise.

The text focuses on postcolonial analysis of H. R. Haggards King’s Solomon Mines. The ideology of the text was showed in the wide historical, biographical and anthropological context with the essential background of literary theory and African studies. To sum up: amalgamation of fiction (adventure) and non-fiction (memoir) literary techniques favoures repressive ideology of the text.
Artykuł poświęcony jest analizie powieści Kopalnie króla Salomona H. R. Haggarda w paradygmacie krytyki postkolonialnej. Zagadnienie ideologii wpisanej w omawiany tekst przedstawiono w szerokim kontekście biograficzno-historycznym, afrykanistycznym, genologiczno-estetycznym oraz antropologicznym.

Artykuł szczegółowo omawia, jakimi technikami i w jakim celu Andrzej Stasiuk używa narzędzi wczesnej etnografii do reprezentacji oraz interpretacji rumuńskich Romów. W zideologizowanej wizji pisarza ulegają oni orientalizacji, dokonanej za pomocą medium fotografii antropologicznej. W ten sposób autor Jadąc do Babadag wpisuje się w wielowiekową tradycję „opisywania” Orientu, kulminującą w romantycznej podróży. Studium tego obrazu Europy Środkowo-Wschodniej jest tytułowa nostalgia, jej punctum – fakt, że nostalgiczne obrazy są alibi dla komercyjnego interesu.

The article discusses the revitalisation practices of Krakow's Zabłocie district and alternative urban activities related to thatdistrict as the effects of degraded landscape stimulation. The text points to the institutional use of the Jewish past of Krakow in self-promotion and the deconstruction of stereotypical vision of the past, based on the Schindler's List film, through alternative local activities.
Artykuł omawia praktyki rewitalizacji krakowskiego Zabłocia oraz alternatywne działania miejskie związane z tą dzielnicą jako efekty stymulacji krajobrazem zdegradowanym. Wskazuje na instytucjonalne wykorzystanie żydowskiej przeszłości Krakowa w autopromocji miasta oraz na dekonstrukcję stereotypowej wizji tej przeszłości, ufundowanej w oparciu o film Lista Schindlera, poprzez alternatywne praktyki lokalne.

The article discusses the mutual inspirations of contemporary  spirituality and the tourism industry, taking the private Muzeum Kamienia (Stone Museum) in Kamien Pomorski as an example. Being an ambiguous object, the institution becomes a medium of bilateral content diffusion between these systems.
Artykuł omawia wzajemne inspiracje współczesnej duchowości oraz przemysłu turystycznego na przykładzie prywatnej instytucji Muzeum Kamienia w Kamieniu Pomorskim. Jako obiekt kuriozalny stanowi ono medium dwukierunkowego przenikania treści pomiędzy tymi układami.

Article is devoted to literary representation of cities and towns in region of Sądecczyzna (after the political turn in ‘89) in context of the spatial turn. It shows anti-urban and anti-modern patterns in the texts, while the same text are multidimensional, being used in tourism industry.
Artykuł omawia zagadnienie literackiej reprezentacji miast i miasteczek Sądecczyzny w polskiej literaturze po 1989 roku z kontekście tzw. zwrotu przestrzennego. Identyfikuje konwencje i stereotypy antymodernistyczne i antycywilizacyjne w poetyce tych utworów. Jednocześnie pokazuje je z perspektywy polityki i ekonomii jako wielowymiarowe. Ideologie produkcji i konsumpcji omawianych utworów rozważa na tle korzyści i zagrożeń związanych z przemysłem turystycznym.

The text explains how the Lao Che rock band discusses the tradition in their so called ‘polish triptych’. The first traditional value, discussed from the postcolonial point of view, is the Slavic tradition. The second one, subverted by Lao Che, is the mythology of the Warsaw Uprising and the polish historical policy based on it. The last ones, which suitability in building a collective identity in the consumption culture is examined,  are religious values.
Artykuł omawia dialog z tradycją prowadzony w trzech albumach muzycznych: Gusła, Powstanie Warszawskie, Gospel zespołu Lao Che. Autorka uważa, że zespół na trzy różne sposoby - kolejno są to: reminiscencja stylistyczna, aktywna kontynuacja, stylizacja polemiczna - aktualizuje tradycję, przywołując wartości polskiej kultury narodowej. W pierwszym albumie w perspektywie postkolonialnej dyskutuje słowiańską przeszłość Polski, w drugim – uprawia z wykorzystaniem mitologii powstańczej politykę historyczną, bazując na różnorodnych mechanizmach uwiarygodnienia przekazu, w trzecim – wskazuje na nieadekwatność tożsamości opartej o wartości religijne ignorujące rzeczywistość kultury konsumpcyjnej.

Small towns and provinces in Wydawnictwo Czarne publications. A reconnaissance
Summary: Article is devoted to urban (and anti-urban) issues in Wydawnictwo Czarne publications. The first part focuses on publishing as a media institution, and the specifics of its communication with the audience. In this case, the “locus communis” is geocultural space of Central Europe. The second part of the article focuses on urban space and poetics, in publisher’s publications. To summarize: the publications in question relate to the idea of anti-urbanism, creating a mythical image of the region, based on temporal, not spatial structure.
Małe miasta i prowincja w ofercie Wydawnictwa Czarne. Rekonesans
Streszczenie: Artykuł poświęcony jest tematyce urbanistycznej (i antyurbanistycznej) w publikacjach Wydawnictwa Czarne. Pierwsza jego część skupia się na wydawnictwie jako instytucji medialnej i specyfice jej komunikacji z publicznością. W omawianym przypadku płaszczyzną porozumienia jest geokulturowa przestrzeń Europy Środkowej. Druga część artykułu zawęża ów wyróżniony obszar do przestrzeni miejskiej, stanowiąc przegląd sposobów jej ujęcia w publikacjach wydawnictwa z Wołowca. Podsumowując: publikacje omawianego wydawnictwa nawiązują do idei antyurbanizmu, kreślą mityczny, oparty na strukturach temporalnych, a nie spacjalnych, obraz regionu.

Artykuł opisuje projekt przebudowy krakowskiego osiedla Kurdwanów autorstwa Piotra Palara jako chybioną interwencję w sferę publiczną; wykazuje, że przyczyną niepowodzenia projektu była jego nadmierna ideologizacja i nieuwzględnienie przez autora agonistycznego charakteru przestrzeni publicznej.

W artykule wskazano modele relacji z przestrzenią publiczną obecne w najnowszej polskiej prozie artystycznej, eseju i reportażu (S. Chutnik, A. Stasiuk, M. Olszewski, F. Springer) w kontekście koncepcji estetyki polityki (J. Rancière), estetyki środowiskowej (A. Berleant) oraz „epistemologii umiejscowienia” (S. Harding). Kryterium wyodrębnienia modelowych kategorii (paternalizm, unikanie, konflikt, wrażliwość) był wybór przez omawianych autorów (bądź ich bohaterów) zróżnicowanych strategii percepcyjnych (punktów „widzenia”), a co za tym idzie – określonych środków artystycznego/językowego obrazowania. Analizowaną przestrzenią publiczną była przedmiejskość i miejskość peryferyjna, hybryda miejskości i nie-miejskości. W konkluzji stwierdzono utopijność idei egalitaryzmu w dostępie do publicznej przestrzeni.
